ROOT CANAL TREATMENT
We know the thought of a root canal can sound daunting, but at Smile Rehab, we believe in making
every dental experience as comfortable and clear as possible. A root canal is a common and highly
effective procedure designed to save your natural tooth from severe decay or infection, preventing
the need for extraction. It's all about relieving pain and restoring your smile !
Understanding Your Root Canal Treatment
There are a few ways we approach root canal treatment, tailored to your specific needs:
1. Standard Root Canal Treatment
This is the most common procedure. We gently remove the infected or inflamed pulp (the soft tissue
inside your tooth), meticulously clean and disinfect the inner chamber, and then seal it to prevent
future issues. It's like giving your tooth a thorough internal refresh!
2. Laser-Assisted Root Canal Therapy (Advanced Care)
For an even more precise and comfortable experience, we offer Laser-Assisted Root Canal Therapy.
This advanced technique utilizes focused laser energy to:
Precisely Target Infection
Enhance Sterilization
Minimize Discomfort
Potentially Faster Healing
3. Root Canal Retreatment
If a previously treated tooth becomes re-infected or doesn't heal as expected, don't worry. We can
often go back in, clean out the old filling material, and re-clean and re-seal the tooth, giving it a
second chance.
4. Apicoectomy (Root-End Surgery)
For persistent infections at the very tip of the tooth's root that standard methods can't reach, we
might perform a small surgical procedure. We remove the infected root tip and seal the end,
ensuring complete eradication of the infection.
How Many Sittings Will You Need?
The number of appointments for your root canal treatment can vary, depending on the complexity
of your case and the technique used:
Standard Root Canal: Most standard root canal treatments are completed in 1 to 2 sittings.
Single Sitting: Possible for straightforward cases with minimal infection.
Multiple Sittings: Common for more complex teeth (like molars with multiple canals), severe
infections, or if we want to ensure complete disinfection before permanent filling. Each session
typically lasts 30-90 minutes.
Laser-Assisted Root Canal Therapy: Often, due to the efficiency and enhanced disinfection offered by
laser technology, these procedures can be completed in 1 to 2 sittings, sometimes reducing the
overall treatment time compared to conventional methods for certain cases.
(After your root canal (whether standard or laser-assisted), a separate appointment will usually be
needed for your final restoration (like a permanent filling and a crown to protect the treated tooth.)
What to Expect After Your Root Canal
It's normal to have some mild symptoms as your body heals. Here’s what you should know:
Normal Post-Treatment Sensations:
Mild Discomfort: You might feel some tenderness or dull ache for a few days. Over-the-counter pain
relievers usually manage this well.
Sensitivity:
Your tooth might be sensitive to pressure or chewing, especially for the first week or two.
We recommend soft foods and avoiding chewing on the treated side.
Temporary Filling Feel: If you have a temporary filling, it might feel a bit different until your
permanent crown or filling is placed.
When to Call Us (Important!):
While rare, some symptoms indicate you should contact us immediately:
Severe or Worsening Pain: If your pain doesn't improve, or gets worse, particularly when biting.
Significant Swelling: Swelling that is increasing, spreading, or accompanied by difficulty swallowing.
Fever or Fatigue: These can be signs of a persistent infection.
Pus Drainage: Any discharge or a "pimple-like" bump on your gums near the treated tooth.
Fractured Tooth or Filling: If your temporary filling or the tooth itself breaks.
